MIDDLETOWN School spirit at High School North has taken a beating in recent years, due in part to the duration of the artificial-turf field project there that left the sports teams without a home field for two seasons.
In an attempt to rejuvenate that sense of spirit, the Booster Club has raised banners along Tindall Road in front of the high school campus, adorned with a design chosen by the students and funded by the club.
Booster Club President Jerry Wexelberg said the purpose of the banners was to bring a "sense of campus pride" to the school.
"We wanted the community at large and anyone passing by the school to understand that there is a demonstrated larger-than-life passion for our school," he said.
Wexelberg said the concept design of the three-foot by two-foot banners came from Booster Club Secretary Tina Wexelberg and volunteer Renee Inzerillo, both of whom also designed the school logo displayed on the turf field and gymnasium floors.
After being presented with several designs from the manufacturer, the designs then were presented to the school's Student Council the overall favorite design is what now hangs outside the school.
Wexelberg said the banners are built to last and also will be used to further the club's fundraising efforts.
"The material they are made from will last for 10 years or more without fading," he said. "The brackets supporting them can withstand hurricane-force winds. These banners are provided by a worldwide recognized firm, and we will soon be adding a lower banner for sponsorship advertising space as an additional fundraising effort."
Eight additional banners will be added to the span of Tindall Road between Route 35 and Park Avenue, emblazoned with "Welcome to Lion Country."
Wexelberg said banners currently are available for sponsorship.
